x My 6th Annual Letterboxd Challenge
Week 1: Come & See (1985)

This week's challenge is to watch the most popular film you haven't seen from the Letterboxd Top 250.
4 out of 5 stars
Horrifying film. Horrifying.Brought out emotions i didnt think a film could bring out in me. Was near tears at the final 20 minutes. Never watching it again and putting myself through movie PTSD but highly recommend everyone to watch it at least once in your life - absolutely no hollywood glamour to mask the gritty harrowing acts of war. I also want to compliment the sound design which was very innovative and really helped me get into the perspective of the character.

Week 2: tbd

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film that has been nominated for the Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award.

Week 3: Paris Blues (1961)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film starring Sidney Poitier.
3 out of 5 stars

Week 4: Betty Blue (1986)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen Cinéma du Look film; AND/OR Amy Heckerling's Look Who's Talking.
3.5 out of 5 stars
This may be one of the most beautifully shot movies ive ever seen. In particular every shot of zorg at night perched over his desk trying to write transports me to being a 10 year old awake past my bedtime sitting in my grandmas brightly lit kitchen, genuinely a vibe. Old films also has this grainy slightly murky and dark wash to everything that makes it feel really comforting and nostalgic. I think my fav portion of the film were when they were staying with ed and lisa, the 4 of them just had great energy and ed was also fashionable as fuck and i loved his dumbass naked woman tie. Unfortunately the film just went on for so fucking long oh god. It was kinda on me tho bc i picked the directors cut that was 3 WHOLE HOURS and i truly think they were 100% in the right to cut it down bc theres only so much random sex scenes ( for artistic integrity of course 🫡 like yeah the fact that she had to playfully kiss his limp penis 15 mins into the film was very necessary to her character development ) and like "quirky" characters i could take being introduced. Speaking of character development i had a feeling this was more of an aesthetics film than a character study bc bettys mental illness is so inconsistent ?? It seems like she ll get super mad at any slight irritation and act out in irrational ways but there are moments when ppl are hostile to her and shes just like. Completely fine with it? Ig bc the interaction was not plot relevant??? Overall a very interesting film tho. Fun to watch at times but i got a bit bored of the same thing happening over and over again. Dont watch the 3 hour cut and youll be fine. I wonder if xavier dolan was specifically inspired by this film when making mommy. I could see a lot of parallels, even with the cinematography. I wouldnt be suprised if he was a big fan of this director

Week 5: Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen Commedia all'italiana film.
3.5 out of 5 stars
Damn those pastas and beans must have been good. I didnt think it was funny, maybe its not my type of humor. Except the one scene where the guy with a broken arm tries to escape out the window but he cant and just lays in a mountain of glass bottles. I found that part weirdly hilarious. BUT the story was genuinely compelling and i got invested in the characters who were all very lovable.

Week 6: Creep 2 (2017)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen Mumblegore film.
3 out of 5 stars
Ok but this was kind of funny tho

Week 7: 30 Days of Night (2007)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen vampire film released in 2000 or later; AND/OR Hou Hsiao-hsien's Millennium Mambo.
4 out of 5 stars
Why go for couples counselling when you can just fight a vampire hoarde and that somehow reconciles all your marital problems? Anyways really liked the film. I love horror films set in small towns so this alaskan town with a population of 150 in the middle of nowhere was immediately super cool. The action was fun and i was really tense throughout and was jus anticipating jumpscares left to right lol. Writing for the vampires line were kinda bad tho ngl

Week 8: Saint Maud (2019)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen horror film directed by a woman.
4 out of 5 stars
Touches a lot on themes of jealousy, loneliness and delusion and is very much a character exploration film - which is my favourite type of films. The very last scene in the ending i think perfectly emcapsulates mauds state of mind vs the reality of the situation.

Week 9: Rango (2011)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film directed by and/or starring Nicholas Ray, Satyajit Ray, Ray Winstone, or Fay Wray.
3.5 out of 5 stars
The scene where rango is sadly hugging his fish friend in front of the road while cars speed by is a whole mood P.s nice fear and loathing reference

Week 10: 3-Iron (2004)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film from Katie Rife's Korean Cinema Homework list.
3 out of 5 stars
This guy literally gets caught (or ALMOST caught) multiple times throughout the film going into houses like mf i thought u were good at this On a more serious note, the movie is very soft and poetic in many ways, the second half of the film was when i started to really enjoy it, i could feel the woman's longing for this guy, how much she was waiting for him. Also guy learns like some shadow stealth bs which is amazingly awesome ??? Mf can kiss a woman right in front of her shitty husbands face and have him not realise it. Now thats star power. Also ive noticed breaking into houses to do random stuff seems to be a pretty common trope in art films.huh. what do ya know.

Week 11: Her (2013)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film recommended in one of YMS' Top 10 videos. You can find lists of these films here.
3.5 out of 5 stars

Week 12: Roman Holiday (1953)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film for which Edith Head wins an Oscar for Best Costume Design; AND/OR Bob Rafelson's Head.
3.5 out of 5 stars
Im gonna be honest. The chemistry wasnt really chemistry-ying for me throughout the film, but damn did that last scene hurt like a mf it was so good I was going to say something about how romcom tropes are timeless but that conclusion completely tore my narrative down tbh! It was also a great rome travel advertisment i found myself craving a trip there everytime they went around taking picture and looking at monuments and eating gelato Also aurdrey hepburn in the short cut i love it !!!!! Did she not kinda look like ariana grande from some angles be honest

Week 13: Mommy (2014)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film directed by Xavier Dolan.
4 out of 5 stars
Well this was a emotional rollercoaster. Amazed at how good the actors were at potraying their characters even down to their facial expressions and postures. Also the daydreaming scene made me cry. Great experience.

Week 14: Mustang (2015)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film on your watchlist from 2019.
4 out of 5 stars
Why do women have to go through so much fucked up bullshit

Week 15: Maniac (2018)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously miniseries. Try looking here or here for starters.
3.5 out of 5 stars
The beginning and end parts were really good, i also loved all the lab scenes but thats because dr.mantleray and his mommy issues absolutely stole the show and every scene he was in i was super invested. The scene where anne was talking to dr.muramoto about the addiction of reliving trauma hit especially hard and her entire character arc was really well done. However what made me drop my ratings were just the fact that the dream sequences were kinda boring and waaayy too stretched out. Especially the pill B episodes and the elven fantasy storyline. Id just be really uninterested when those scenes came up and when they switched to the lab storyline with dr.mantleray i would be relieved i was back to the interesting parts.

Week 16: Street Flow (2019)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film with a black woman writer and/or director.

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen Powell & Pressburger film; AND/OR Paul Mazursky's Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice.
5 out of 5 stars
I definitely did not expect this to be as good as it was. Suprised at how vibrant and beautiful all the backgrounds and sets were. Story was amazing as well and the red shoes ballet was absolutely mesmerizing - still blown away at how engrossed in the play i was.

Week 24: In the Cut (2003)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film directed by Jane Campion.
3.5 out of 5 stars
A very beautiful looking film and definitely sensual cinema, but some of the character motivations was just so spaghetti i cant really overlook it ?? Like did i miss something why r these characters suddenly doing those specific actions

Week 25: Rumble in the Bronx (1995)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film produced and/or distributed by Golden Harvest.
2.5 out of 5 stars
Love how the violence is kinda intense but the entire vibe of the movie is so cheesy and 80s that it feels weirdly out of place but also makes it kinda hilarious

0 out of 5 stars

Concert films are really not my thing

Week 28: Mur Murs (1981)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film from Criterion's Eclipse series.
4.5 out of 5 stars
A really beautiful and calming short documentary that gives you a glimpse into the murals you see on the streets, who made them and what was their stories. The interviews w the painters were so interesting and came from so many different walks of life, i learnt alot abt the inportance of mural art and what value it holds for different people. Also the film was just captured so well, i really enjoyed that there would be a whispery voice followed by the image of the mural crediting the artist, and its always in sync w the music they play in the bg

Week 29: Fantastic Planet (1973)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen science fiction film made in the 1970s.

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film written by either David Mamet or Neil Simon ; AND/OR Greg Berlanti's Love, Simon; AND/OR Antonio Campos' Simon Kille
5 out of 5 stars
Its like watching dexter or you without any of the first person inner monologue so you have no idea what is going through the persons head when their doing absolutely psychopathic shit - which is a cool concept. Slowly realizing that there was something very wrong with the main protag was very interesting.

Week 31: Fargo (1996)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film recommended by Bong Joon-ho.
3.5 out of 5 stars
Take a shot everytime someone says yeah and you will be meeting your maker real soon. Fargo starring : The PI from 30 rock, Adam Sandler playing Ryan Gosling from drive, Danny Gonzalez, Jerry from rick and morty. Naw i did not expect it to be a dark comedy but I was pleasantly suprised. The cinematography was freaking gorgeous and the small town americana setting really gave off liminal space vibes.

Week 32: Grey Gardens (1975)

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film parodied in "Documentary Now!" AND the corresponding episode.
3.5 out of 5 stars
The grey gardens reminded me of the covid years. Stuck in a home day after day reminiscing about the good ol days while wallowing in the regrets of the past, you feel like there is no future, and you can only look back. Little Edie and Big Edie's relationship was fascinating but so hard to watch, they had this intense co dependence and built up resentment and projection that most mother daughter relationships often had. I saw myself in them. It kinda made me sad, watching the film, just seeing these 2 stuck in stasis, constantly thinking about the glory days. Its time to move forward yalls. Also i looked up little edie on wikipedia and apparently after her mom died she moved away and became a gay icon lmfao Also ... does anyone feel like little edies character inspired the white lotus character Tanya??? Their stories especially after Big Edie dies is insanely similar

Week 33: Once Upon a Time in Anatolia 2011

This week's challenge is to watch a previously unseen film from either Monsieur Flynn's Movies to See Before Your End Credits list, kurt k's Personal Cannon list, or my own A Hundred or So of My Favorites list.
